Discover Yangon - 'Garden City of the East'
Sule Pagoda – said to enshrine a hair of the Buddha, the golden chedi of Sule Pagoda dominates the downtown area.
Kaba Aye Pagoda – (World Peace Pagoda) where the 2,500th demise of Buddha was commemorated in 1954.
National Museum – home to many interesting exhibits about Myanmar's history. Open from 10am to 4pm daily except public holidays. Entrance fee is US $5 per person.
National Gem Emporium & Museum – see an impressive display of gems mined in Myanmar and a wide range of precious stones and jewellery on sale. Open from 9.30am to 4.30pm daily except Monday's and public holidays. Entrance fee is US $5 per person. Adjacent to the Gem Museum is VES, a company producing jewellery for export where you can sometimes see artisans at work.
Glass Factory – local craftsmen hand-blow glass in very simple surroundings, creating glasses, bowls, vases and ornaments.
Botahtaung Pagoda – named after 1,000 military leaders who escorted eight hair relics of the Lord Buddha from India over 2,500 years ago. The river is just a short walk from the Pagoda and it's a good place to watch the sunset.
Han Thar Wa De War Cemetery – graves are immaculately maintained in attractive gardens. The cemetery is just off Pyay Road, close to the junction with U Wisara Road.
Bogyoke (Scott) Market – this market sells everything from fruit and vegetables to silks and woodcarvings. It's the best place to find gifts for your friends – or a souvenir for yourself! Open from 10am to 5pm.
Mingalar Market – is one of the biggest markets in Yangon with lots of fresh goods as well as all sorts of other items useful for daily life. The Myanmar people often go here to buy fabrics and clothes.
Hledan Market – is best known for fresh fruit, vegetables and meats. If you want to see a "local" market, this is the best one to choose and morning is the best time to go.
Syriam and Kyauk-Tan
An opportunity to see the countryside around Yangon and to cross the Bago River via Than Lyin bridge. You will explore the fascinating local market in Than Lyin before continuing on a half hour drive to Kyauk-Tan. A brief boat ride takes us to the newly renovated Kyauktan Ye-Le Pagoda (Mid-River Pagoda), guarded by two colourful ogres. This pagoda is set on a small island in the middle of the river and is a popular place for pilgrimages.
Twante - An adventurous tour to experience village life
Located on the other side of the Yangon river, Twante village has very much retained its original character. A local taxi is taken to the jetty and then a local ferry across the river. Once across, there is a one hour drive by local taxi to Twante. The road is extremely bumpy and you should be prepared for an uncomfortable yet very interesting ride, which provides a glimpse of life on and along the famous Twante Canal.
After a visit to the Shwesandaw Pagoda a trishaw is taken to the pottery area, a large part of the population in Twante is engaged in producing pottery. Walking through the many workshops where locals are busy molding pots, visitors can observe this very traditional craft. Later return to Yangon by local taxi and ferry.
Bago (Pegu) – Myanmar's ancient capital
Myanmar's ancient capital and seaport, Bago (Pegu), is situated 50 miles northeast of Yangon and the drive takes approximately two hours. On arrival in Bago a visit is made to the Shwemawdaw Pagoda (Great Golden God Pagoda). Higher than the famous Shwedagon Pagoda, its golden dome is inlaid with diamonds which dominates the countryside.
At Shwethalyaung Pagoda with its gigantic reclining Buddha, witness the fact that Mona Lisa isn't the only one with an irresistible smile! This statue is considered the most lifelike and beautiful of all reclining Buddha statues in Myanmar. Visits are also made to the Kalyani Sima Ordination Hall and Mahazedi Pagoda, which has a beautiful bell-shaped structure. Last but not least stroll through the colourful local market before returning to Yangon. Time permitting, a visit can be made to the Htauk Kyant War Cemetery which is on the road between Yangon and Bago. |
